Whilst in stationary traffic I leave around a 1 car length gap in stationary traffic this is because

  1. Car in front could roll back
  2. You may get rear ended and be pushed forward into the car infront (most common crash in the UK)
  3. When emergency services/bikes turn up you have space to move over.  (This helps them out)
  4. Pedestrians find it easier to cross the road
  5. You can see more in front
  6. Car ahead breaks down you can easily get past…
  7. Easier lane swap
  8. Road markings are easier to see for you and others
  9. Less likely to block junctions
  10. Potentially further from the fumes of the car in front
